BILGE PILL™ VALIDATION STUDY
Aboard the historic lightship
CHESAPEAKE

1. The treatment of about 100-gallons of extremely oily bilge water was documented for a full month, after the addition of 20 Bilge Pills™. 2. 30 minutes after adding the Bilge Pill™ and circulating the water, the oil has begun to disperse. Droplets that remain on the water's surface are thinner and lighter in color.
3. One Week Later- All the oil remains dispersed.
There are no signs of oil droplets, oil deposition or an oily sheen.
4. One Month Later- After the bilge water has been pumped out but before any rinsing or wiping, the rusty pan under the motor shows no sign of residual oil.
5. Bilge: 72 hours after Bilge Pills™ were removed. Unclear water, oil slick on hands, and build-up on hoses, pumps and switches. 6. Bilge: 36 hours after Bilge Pills™ had been replaced. Oil slick is breaking up, no oil slick on hands, and no build up on hoses, pumps, and switches.

TESTING DATA - Performance of Bilge Pill™ in comparison to commercial products

Product Observations
The Bilge Pill™ Oil was emulsified within 15 minutes and remained emulsified indefinitely
Sea Sharp Bilge Odor & Petroleum Eliminator Oil was not emulsified
West Marine Bilge Cleaner Oil was emulsified after 15 minutes but separated after 4 hours
West Marine Bilgezyme Oil was not emulsified
Boat Armor Bilge Cleaner Oil was emulsified after 15 minutes but separated after 2 hours
Boat Life Bilge Cleaner Oil was not emulsified
OrBILGE Bilge Cleaner Oil was not emulsified
Sea Bowld Bilge Cleaner Oil was not emulsified
Star Brite Bilge Cleaner Oil was not emulsified

In field tests, all of the boats tested with The Bilge Pill™ showed significant dispersal of the oily sludge with 24-48 hours. After 3-5 days of normal operation, all of the boats were devoid of oil in the bilge water and there was no evidence of petroleum buildup on the interior hull. Once clean, the bilge areas remained clean for 45 to 60 days. In field and laboratory tests, ONE Bilge Pill™ will treat 1200 gallons of bilge water and is the equivalent to more than 20 gallons of other liquid bilge cleaners.

USE 1 BILGE PILL™ PER 5 GALLONS OF BILGE WATER

Test Procedures:

Efficacy test: To test the performance of the Bilge Pill™, the shake flask test specified by the EPA NCP Product Schedule (40 CFR Part 300.900) for oil spill mitigation was employed. A variety of petroleum products were tested including Louisiana Crude Oil, spent 10W40 motor oil, samples of bilge water contaminated with a petroleum mixture, and standardized crude oil. The cleaning agent was added to the flask and the flasks were incubated at 25 degrees C. with shaking at 150 rpm for 15 min. The flasks were allowed to sit undisturbed following the shaking phase. Unless otherwise noted 0.5g of cleaning agent was added to the flask. Visual observations were made at 1 and 24 hour intervals. In some experiments, larger volumes of seawater were employed to test product performance.

Field Test: Field tests were performed using 4 oz. Cakes of product. The cakes were placed in the bilge of ten (10) boats ranging in size from 25 to 100 feet. The bilges were 2-10 gallons. Efficacy was measured by visual inspection. The criterion for success was removal of more than 90% of the visible petroleum.

Results and Findings:

The table above lists the bilge cleaning products tested. The criterion for successful dispersal of the oil was clear evidence of emulsification. Evidence of formation of a stable emulsion was no visible separation of oil-water mixture.
